Limestone trial piece of a private person. There is a carved head of a princess on the reverse. The profile head of the person, facing left, was finally carved. Revered: roughly carved head of a royal princess. There are 2 nb-hieroglyphs, 2 eyes, and 3 and a half pairs of lips. Reign of Akhenaten. From Amarna, Egypt. Figure from a mummy-bead net: textcolumn with Anubis

The object is a figure that was originally incorporated in a large bead net, consisting of cylindrical beads with (at least) ten figures made of smaller beads. This is a vertical column of text, topped with a reclining Anubis, facing left in concordance with the direction of the hieroglyphs. Some cylindrical beads, part of the bead net, are still attached to the column.

TOMB EQUIPMENT: MUMMY TRAPPINGS

This mummy decoration, which dates to the Late Period, consists of a network of tubular beads arranged in squares. A scarab with outstretched wings and the Four Sons of Horus are attached to the middle. The net was placed over the mummy bandages and had the same function as the amulets which protected the deceased during his journey in the underworld.

Horus standing on the crocodiles: he appears standing, with the youth lock on the right side of his head, holding serpents in his hands and trampling on two crocodiles. On the back is an inscription consisting of five heavily damaged lines, which are practically illegible.

Globular container with a flat bottom and a small convex lip. The quite large opening at the top is closed with a flat disc made of a grey-green hard stone inset into the neck of the vessel. The narrow hole nonetheless allows for the insertion of the stick used for applying the cosmetic, which was probably kohl.

The funeral procession on water

This fragment shows two scenes of funerary boats travelling to the right towards a booth under which are jars and a conical loaf. The boat in the upper register is propelled by four oarsmen; in the cabin at the front two persons are seen talking to each other. On top of the catafalque (?) five mourners are sitting, dressed in large white robes. In the lower register a person on the right takes hold of the prow of a boat rowed by four oarsmen. The boat is carrying several standing individuals: one man carrying papyrus bouquets, another holding a large stick, another with a fan, and two men carrying ritual vessels, a funerary figurine, and a shabti box. At the extreme right, beneath the upper booth, a servant is holding two jars on the ground.

ostrich egg

Decorated ostrich eggs date mainly from the second millennium BC, and the majority are decorated with dots and white lines, or black zig-zag lines; eggs bearing incised lines, spirals and even animal outlines are much rarer. The egg in Brussels is decorated with 37 engraved spirals, running from the base to the top of the shell. The purpose of this type of object is unknown.

Shabti of king Sethos I

Shabtis are already found in funerary equipment of the Middle Kingdom. From the New Kingdom, they theoretically numbered 365 workers and 37 overseers, one for each team of 10 workers. It is thought that they were expected to undertake forced labour in the next world on behalf of the deceased, and thus they were often provided with small model tools. This superb shabti in blue faience was one of the large collection of funerary figurines made for Sethos I. The wig, eyebrows, collar, as well as the agricultural instruments which the shabti holds in its hands, are painted in black. The text is taken from chapter 6 of the Book of the Dead.

Decorated vessel of the Predynastic Period

This large vessel has been fitted with two loop handles as well as two wavy handles. It is decorated with ornamental as well as figurative brown-painted figures. The representations include mountain goats and ostriches in between cross-hatched fields, which are perhaps hunter's nets. Below is a frieze of triangles which is perhaps meant to symbolize the mountainous desert.

Terracotta statuette of two actors

The two figures are set on a thin base and are shown standing and embracing. On the basis of their posture and facial expressions they have been identified as actors. The right figure is male and the left figure is female because of the indication of breasts. Both wear short-sleeved chitons girded around the hips, hanging down to above the knees. Another interpretation of this group statuette identifies the figures as a pair of beggars.

Tomb statue of Nefer-hetepes

 Nefer-hetepes is represented standing against a back slab reaching up to her shoulders. Her legs are together, and her arms are pendant beside her body with empty, open hands. She is dressed in an ankle-length dress with shoulder straps, a broad collar and a long wig.

Group statue of Pepi and Ra-shepses

The large, dominant figure in the centre of this group statue is that of Pepi. She is embracing her slightly smaller husband in a gesture which is quite common in group statues. Her son is standing on her other side, represented nude and wearing the sidelock which is typical for children. He has his arm around her back. The high artistic quality of the group is apparent from the well-preserved face of the man.
