Head of Augustus

Head of Augustus
27 B.C.–A.D. 14
Roman Period, Augustus
This small head is thought to depict the Roman Emperor Augustus. It follows a Roman prototype for his portrait that was developed in the earlier part of his long reign, but continued in use. Paul Zanker has suggested it might have been created late in Augustus' reign or even in that of Tiberius. Egyptian influence may be present in the suggestion of loose flesh beneath the prominent cheekbones.
The original context of the head is unknown, but it was said to be from Memphis, which is reasonable. A Memphite provenance would reflect the importance of the traditional religious capital in Augustus's political domination of the country. A cult of Augustus existed there, and the High Priest of Ptah of Memphis, the most important official in the country's traditional religious structure, was chosen as its chief officiant, the "prophet of Caesar." This appointment was surely intended to encourage the cooperation of the country.

Queen Ahhotep II

Queen Ahhotep II was possibly the chief wife of pharaoh Kamose, the last ruler of the 17th dynasty of Egypt. Ahhotep II's gilded funerary sarcophagus, originally discovered at Dra Abu el-Naga, is now located in the Cairo Museum of Egypt. It is 2.12 metres or almost 7 feet long. Her tomb originally contained several items bearing the name of Kamose, but more objects in it were inscribed with the name of Ahmose I.

statue of an Egyptian lady

This statue of an Egyptian lady dates to the Ptolemaic Period, more exactly to the 3rd century BC, and it is characterised by the strong emphasis on the distinctive elements of the female body. The smile on the face is strongly indicated, giving a certain brightness to the whole face, and it contrasts strongly with the stiffness of the rest of the body. The woman stands with her left foot advanced and leans, both arms stretched alongside the body, on the back pillar, which is uninscribed. She is dressed in a long robe which is only discernible at the neckline and the top of the ankles.

Pa-seba-khai-en-ipet

Outer Sarcophagus of the Royal Prince, Count of Thebes, Pa-seba-khai-en-ipet
Egyptian, Classical, Ancient Near Eastern Art
In the Twenty-first Dynasty, the Egyptian elites stopped building elaborate tombs. Instead, they transferred the scenes normally painted on tomb walls to the coffin. Pa-seba-khai-en-ipet’s outer coffin shows multiple scenes of the gods and the deceased worshipping them. Not only does the coffin present the deceased as Osiris, but it also illustrates the many gods he will confront in the afterlife.
The damage to the painted surface on the left side of the coffin has been left unrepaired to reveal how the carpenters pinned smaller pieces of wood together with wooden pegs to make a coffin. Artists then plastered and painted the surface to make it appear smooth.

Sarcophagus and Lid of Seshem-Nefer

Sarcophagus and Lid of Seshem-Nefer
The sarcophagus of Seshem-Nefer and its lid are rectangular. The lid has a handle on each side for carrying it.
Unlike the sarcophagi of the Old Kingdom, which were decorated with false doors and windows, this sarcophagus has no decoration except for a hieroglyphic text on its left side. The band of text is not finely carved. The false door or window was made to facilitate the entrance and the exit of the Ba, or spirit of the deceased, as the sarcophagus was thought to be the house of the mummy according to Ancient Egyptian beliefs.
